I’m the type of person that likes to go with the flow. I enjoy following the cues in my life and seeing what happens. I have done this for all of my life and it works for me, well I am not dead is what I mean.
This year at work I was presented with an Individual Development Plan document to complete. My first reaction was “Damnit, now I have to think of ‘in 5 years time’ “ I hated that vibe, because I don’t like disappointment and for me when you plan you have to leave room for disappointment.
I went ahead and set up a meeting with our CTO to get an understanding and get started on the document. After this meeting it changed my perspective of the way I looked at the whole exercise and I was excited about working on my career development. Some challenges arose while I was completing it and I felt it could’ve been structured better so I made a suggestion to have it looked at by one of our very best UX/UI Designers, I know for sure he will make us not only understand everything in the way it looks but also make us want to do it at first glance.
In the mean time I continue to track my progress and pay attention to my journey and my my my, what a beautiful thing. The difference between going with the flow and planning is you are more intentional, before I knew what I wanted but it was at the back of my head and I thought yeah, I am working towards it but I am following the cues and working on each project and getting better with time.
Having a plan and being intentional is a whole different ball game, listen to me, planning is the vibe. I have achieved much more that I was hoping to achieve in a few weeks, and this is not about reaching the ‘goal’ but also the skills I am picking up in the process. What a sweet journey this is going to be, the best thing is that I am not bored. I get bored easily, put me on a journey and I will be over it in a month and I don’t see myself getting bored with this one.
I guess what I want to let you guys know is that it’s okay to get out of your flow, it doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy or benefit from it. Just remember to apply it where it fits, it doesn’t mean if it works for your career it will work for every other aspect in your life. So adding some structure to the flow of your path is also a vibe ;-D
